Charles "Chuck" Mather 1926 - 2011 BENNINGTON, VT Charles Hewitt "Chuck" Mather, 85, a resident of Webb Street in Bennington died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a brief illness. He was born in New York City Jan. 12, 1926, son of Guy H. Mather and Marion (Tuthill) Mather. He received his education in Westwood, N.J., where he was a graduate of Westwood High School. He later attended New Hampton School and the University of Maryland. A World War II veteran, Mr. Mather served in the Navy in the South Pacific and later served aboard the U.S.S. Missouri. Charles married the former Nancy K. Harris on Sept. 6, 1952, in Baltimore, Md. Mrs. Mather died August 25, 2007. For many years, Mr. Mather was employed at the Chittenden Bank in Bennington from which he retired. Mr. Mather was a longtime member of the Bennington Planning Commission where he served as chairman. He was also a member of the Bennington County Industrial Corporation and a Life Member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks # 567. For 50 years, Chuck was a member of the Hill 19 Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and golf. Chuck also enjoyed spending his summers at Brennan's Bay on Lake Ontario and winters in Punta Gorda, Fla. Survivors include his children, Charles H. "Chip" Mather Jr. and his wife Mary Jean of Shady Side, Md., Marjorie Bowes Kaat and her husband Jim of Stuart, Fla., John Mather of New York City, NY, Robert Mather and his wife Margaret of Denver, Colo., Scott Mather and his wife, Sheila of Bennington; four grandchildren, Katie and Sarah Mather of Shady Side, Md. and Bryan and Erin Mather of Denver, Colo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday Dec. 1, 2011, at 11 a.m. The burial with military honors will follow at the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery. A reception will follow the service at the Mount Anthony Country Club. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Charles H. Mather may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home Activities Fund through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
