LEOMINSTER, Mass. -- Charles W. Perkins, 87, of Lunenburg, formerly of Shaftsbury and North Bennington, Vt. and Casselbury, Fla., died Monday, July 16, 2007, at his home after a long illness.

Charles was born in Shaftsbury on July 14, 1920, the son of Albert and Florence Whitman Perkins. He married the former Margaret Young on Dec. 11, 1941. Charles graduated from North Bennington High School in 1938 and attended Hudson Valley Technical College.

He was employed by Stanley Corp., Tansitor Electronics and Jard Manufacturing Co. and was the holder of two patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. An active member of the Elks, he also served the community as a member of both Shaftsbury and North Bennington Fire Departments and as a Cub Scout Master. He served on the Bingo Committee at the North Bennington fire department for many years, was one of the first members of the Bennington Rescue Squad and a First Aid Instructor for the Red Cross.

He cherished spending time with his family, both at home and while camping, and enjoyed bowling, fishing and hunting.

He leaves his wife of 65 years; two sons, Charles of North Bennington, Vt., and his wife Sally, Peter of Casselberry, Fla., and his wife Penny; two daughters, Doris McKeon of Lunenburg, and her husband Mark, and Bonnie Squiers and her husband David of White Creek, N.Y., nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, a step-granddaughter, many cousins, nieces and nephews; and his life-long friends, Dan LeBarron and Bob Russ. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanette Hurley, and a brother, Edgar Perkins.

Funeral services for Charles will be held Friday morning, July 20, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home 213 West Main Street Bennington, Vermont. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Thursday evening July 19, 2007 from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
