Charles W. Ray

1935 - 2010 BENNINGTON, VT Charles W. Ray, 74, a resident of Putnam Street in Bennington, died on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at the Centers for Living and Rehab in Bennington, following a long illness.

Born in New York, N.Y. Dec. 18, 1935, he was the son of the late Albert D. and Bernice Townsend Ray. He received his early education in Pleasantville, N.Y., and Aruba, Dutch West Indies. He was a graduate of the former Bennington High School class of 1954. Mr. Ray was an Air Force veteran from 1955 to 1959. Mr. Ray married the former Marie A. Morin on Feb. 16, 1963, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls, N.Y.

In earlier years, Charlie was employed at the BenMont Paper Co. In 1964 he went to work as a postal clerk at the Bennington Post Office and retired from there after 35 years on Jan. 1, 1999.

He was a former member of the Green Mountain Auto Sports Club. Mr. Ray was a very active member of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church, where he and his wife, Marie, volunteered to provide many of the Remembrance Gatherings. He also helped the women of Saint Anne's Society whenever they needed a helping hand. Charlie was very proud to come into full communion with the Catholic Church at Sacred Heart Saint Francis in April of 2007. He later became an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion until the time of his illness. His interests included gardening, nature and history. His main interest was his family and grandchildren. Charlie and Marie spent many memorable days traveling the East Coast and also enjoyed a trip to Aruba.

He leaves his wife, Marie A. Ray of Bennington; a son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Elizabeth Ray, and their children, Anna and Kathleen of Durham, N.C.; two daughters and sons-in -law, Jeanne and Gene McKenna and their children, Ryan, Justin, Megan and Kevin of Bennington, and Gail and Kenneth Robinson and their children, Rebecca and Matthew of Shaftsbury; a brother, Albert Ray, and his wife, Virginia, of Bennington; an aunt, Ruth Ray of Cape Cod, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A prayer service will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Monday, March 22, at 9:30 a.m. and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m., where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Sunday, March 21, 2010 from 2 to 5 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The Vigil Service will be held on Sunday afternoon. The members of the St. Anne's Society will be gathering at the funeral home on Sunday at 3 p.m. to pay their respects.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
