1918 - 2014 BENNINGTON Charles J. "Chuck" Sawyer, 96, a resident of South Street, died peacefully on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his family. Born in Bennington on May 7, 1918, he was the son of the late Darrell and Wilhemina (Neher) Sawyer. He attended local schools. Chuck was a World War II Navy veteran. He served throughout the Pacific Theatre as a member of the Navy's "Seabees" team. Chuck married the former Ann Moore at Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. on Aug. 19, 1950. A longtime businessman in the community for many years, Chuck operated several service stations up and down Main Street. Chuck was a member and Past Chief of the Bennington Fire Department. He served for 62 years as a member of the Stark Hose Company, the Bradford Hook & Ladder Company and the Putnam Hose Company. He served as chief from 1966 to 1970. Chuck was part of the original planning committee that bought the Bennington Battle Day celebration under the auspices of the fire department and greatly enlarged the scope of the event. Very active in the community, Chuck was a past member of the Bennington School District board, past commander of American Legion Post 13 and member of VFW Post 1332 and DAV Chapter 4. He was also a member of Bennington Elks Lodge 567 and Knights of Columbus Council 307. For 29 years Chuck and his family had a camp on Lake George. When he retired Chuck worked as a mechanic at a marina there, a job he truly enjoyed. Survivors include his wife, Ann Sawyer of Bennington; a daughter, Nancy Sawyer of Cornwall Conn. and twins, Maria Sawyer of Las Vegas, Nev. and Mark Sawyer and his wife, Theresa of Bennington; two grandsons, Connor and Ryan Sawyer of Bennington; a sister, Barbara Butcher of West Palm Beach, Fla. and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Chuck was predeceased by a daughter, Cathy Sawyer, a sister, Marge Shanahan and a brother, Darrell "Squirrel" Sawyer. At Chuck's request there will be no services held.
