DORSET -- Charlotte Stannard Brooks, 74, a lifelong resident of Dorset, died at her residence on Saturday morning, May 3, 2003.

She was born in Dorset on Nov. 19, 1928, and was the daughter of John and Lucy (Norton) Stannard. She received her education in Dorset and was a graduate of Burr & Burton Seminary in Manchester. She attended Albany Business College in Albany, N.Y. She married Peter Brooks in Dorset on Feb. 1, 1947. Mr. Brooks died on Aug. 23, 2000. Mrs. Brooks was the bookkeeper for her husband, who had operated an electrical business in Dorset for several years. Charlotte had been a self-taught artist and has sold her paintings throughout the area and has paintings around the world. Charlotte has been involved in several functions over the years in Dorset. She has been a justice of the peace, held a seat on the board of civil authority, has been involved with the Memorial Day celebrations, which included her reading of the story of Flanders’ Field at the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert.

Charlotte was also involved with several committees at the church and was a deacon. Peter and she would undertake the plantings of the marigolds at the church each spring.

She was a trustee at Hildene in Manchester, and was a member of the Southern Vermont Arts Council. As an artists, she also gave lessons to several people in the area. Charlotte was a member of the VFW auxiliary. She also would knit sweaters and hats for community sharing in Dorset.

She is survived by two brothers, John Stannard and Richard Stannard, and several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday afternoon, may 13, at the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. James Hopkins Gray, pastor officiating. Interment will be private. There are no visitations scheduled.
