Chester E. Harvey

BENNINGTON -- Chester E. Harvey, 88, a former resident of Bennington and more recently of Scotia, N.Y. died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Prospect Nursing Home in North Bennington following a long illness.

Born in Bennington Jan. 28, 1916, he was the son of the late Edwin A. Harvey and Gladys (Stratton) Harvey Hackney. He received his education in the Bennington schools.

Mr. Harvey first married the former Eleanor Greene who survives. He later married Dorothy May Fredenburg on March 8, 1947 in Herkimer, N.Y. Dorothy died June 23, 1995.

Mr. Harvey was a heavy equipment operator and was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 106 in Albany, N.Y. Over the years, he had been employed at the William E. Dailey Company in Shaftsbury, DeLuke’s Construction and Percey Construction of Scotia. During World War II, Chester was employed by ALCO as a crane operator at the Army Depot in Schenectady, N.Y.

Operating heavy equipment was the center of Mr. Harvey’s life and was of significant importance to him.

Survivors include his first wife, Eleanor Greene Welch; a daughter, Evelyn Harvey; three sons and their wives, Frederick and Glenna Harvey, Donald and Linda Harvey and Phil and Eleanor Harvey, all of Shaftsbury. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and their spouses, Aretino Barbarossa, Michelle and Albert Ferrante, Eric Harvey, Jodie and Martin Saumur, Kimberly Thompson, Laura and Steve Gillis, Wendy and Tyler McConnell, Shannon and Gerald “Buddy” Chapman and Terri and Jerry Pate; and a niece, Joan Bump Hoyt. In addition to his second wife, Mr. Harvey was predeceased by a daughter, Jean Lamira Harvey, a great-grandson, Ezekiel Miller and a sister, Lillian Harvey Bump.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Maple Hill Cemetery.
