1918-2013 BENNINGTON Chester E. Stockman, 95, a longtime resident of Silver Street, died Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Bennington Health & Rehabilitation. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 6, 1918, he was the son of the late Earle and Gladys Eliza (Brooks) Stockman. He was a graduate of Flushing, NY High School and attended the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Long Island. Chester married the former Frances M Quirk in Chicago, Illinois on October 25, 1941. Chet was employed briefly at Clark, Oaks & Greenwood, and Sperry Gyroscope in New York, and for many years at American Airlines in Albany, N.Y., and Tansitor Electronics. In later years he owned and operated the "Now and Then" antique bookstore. Chet had been a longtime member and past president of the Bennington Lions Club and was chair of the Sight and Hearing Committee for several years. He was the recipient of the Lion's Melvin Jones award. He enjoyed collecting antiques and old books. He was an accomplished woodworker and all his family and many friends enjoy his furniture and accessories every day. Survivors include his wife, Frances M Stockman of Bennington; three children, Ruth E Ratelle ( Jean) of Bennington, Eileen S Dick ( James) of Rutland, George B Stockman ( Patricia) of Collierville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren ; Cathy Scribner, and Eileen Main of Bennington, Amy Sinclair of South Portland, Maine, John Ratelle of Eagle Bridge, N.Y., Maureen Bennett of Litchfield, N.H., Suzanne Buckley of Ludlow, Andrew Dick of Brattleboro, Brook Abellada of Simpsonville, S.C. and Michael Stockman of West Allis, Wis.; His 17 great grandchildren include; Abby and Carli Scribner, Rylee Sinclair, Nicole, Jake and Max Ratelle, Miles, Madison and Will Main, Yvette and Colby Bennett, Kathryn and Joshua Buckley, Emilia and Alexander Dick and Nathan and Reece Abellada; a brother, Thomas W. Stockman of Bennington and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Judy Sinclair and son, William Joseph Stockman. FUNERAL NOTICE: At Mr. Stockman's request private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
