BATH, Maine -- Chester G. Shepard, 88, formerly of Leeds, passed away Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, at home with his loving wife and daughter by his side.

Chester was born Sept. 24, 1917, in Claremont, N.H., to, George and Bertha Shepard. He grew up in the Albany, N.Y., area and in Bennington, Vt.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II assigned to the defense of Portland Harbor at Fort McKinley.

On Sept. 6, 1944, he married Laurel V. Pease. They had one daughter, Sharon, a constant source of joy for them.

He worked at the Cascade Woolen Mill and was a lead technician at the Carleton Woolen Mill when he retired.

He loved to read, work with computers and play golf. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to play golf, as well as how to build ham radios, which was his other passion. He was a member of the QCWA and Pinetree ham radio chapters. He loved to play chess and belonged to the Chess Club in Winthrop for many years. He loved Sharon’s apple pies.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Laurel, of 61 years; his daughter, Sharon A. Stevens of Bath; his two granddaughters; a grandson, as well as cousins, many nephews and nieces and friends.

He is predeceased by his parents; and sisters, Emma Hoyt, Audrey Foucher and Grace Barber, all of Vermont.
