AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- Mr. Chester J. “Chet” Harrington, 66, a former resident of Bennington, Vt. and a resident of Amsterdam for over 20 years, died peacefully at his home on Jan. 24, 2008.

Chet was born in Bennington on Nov. 16, 1941, the son of the late Gaylord Henry and Helen Gertrude (Thompson) Harrington. He attended the former Bennington High School and Hudson Valley Community College in Troy where he specialized in technical courses in tool and die making and drafting.

He was an accomplished machinist, for many years working at the Ren Tool and Die Manufacturing Company in Schenectady.

He had also been self-employed as a stone mason and had crafted the façade of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall on North Street in Bennington.

Chet was a member of the Eagles Aerie 1861 of Bennington and V.F.W. Post 701 in Amsterdam. He enjoyed motorcycles and motorcycle racing, baseball, fishing and moose hunting.

Chet was married to the former Dorothy H. O’Callaghan, who predeceased him in 1983.

He leaves his two brothers, Arnold K. Harrington and his wife Carol of Bennington and Thomas L. Harrington of Benton, Ky.; step mother Mary (Whiteway) Harrington of Bennington; step-sister Cindy Watson of Bennington; aunt Doris Pratt of North Bennington; uncle and aunt Rupert and Iva Harrington of Statesville, N.C.; his close friend Linda Bottomley and her daughter Shannon of Amsterdam; nieces and nephews Lynne Farrell and husband Andy of Bennington; Frank Harrington and wife Susan of Warrenton, Va.; Leslie Ary and husband David of Sharon, Tenn.; Allison Jeffords and husband Jack of Metropolis, Ill., J.T. Harrington and wife Erin of Coldwater, Miss.; seven great-nieces and nephews and several cousins.

At Chet’s request, there will be no funeral services. Private burial will take place in the Harrington family lot in the Waite Cemetery in Shaftsbury.
