NORTH BENNINGTON -- Chris Lee Gaines, 50, a resident of Orebed Road, in North Bennington, died unexpectedly Monday, April 30, 2007, from injuries he sustained in a house fire at his home.

Chris was born in Niskayuna, N.Y., on July 6, 1956, the son of Osborne and Harriet (Norton) Gaines, and received his education in Hoosick Falls (N.Y.) Schools. Upon graduating from Hoosick Falls High School, Chris enlisted in the Coast Guard retiring as a medic after 24 years of service. With his brother Ben, he worked on the family farm, Breezy Hill Farm, before going to work as a truck driver for Interstate Commodities in Troy, N.Y., for nearly six years. Chris was a member of the local amateur radio club where he was responsible for setting up and giving live directions for radio broadcasts.

Chris was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bennington where he served as deacon and held nearly every office within the church. Chris served as a volunteer firefighter for several fire departments and developed the Junior Rescue Squad in Hoosick Falls while he was attending high school.

Chris is survived by his parents of Hoosick Falls; his son, Carl Gaines, of Bennington; his daughter, April Gaines, of North Carolina; his brother, Benjamin Gaines, of Hoosick Falls; aunts, uncles and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Louise Gaines Benner.

Funeral services for Chris will be held Monday, May 7, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Bennington. The Rev. Jerrod Hugenot will conduct the service. Interment services with military honors will follow in the family lot in Village Cemetery in Bennington. Visiting hours will be held Sunday, May 6, 2007, at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
