Christopher Arthur Faris Obituary
Christopher Arthur Faris, a native of Shaftsbury, known for decades to many in the Bennington regional and Bennington College communities, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Philadelphia on February 3, 2017. He was born in Bennington on June 6, 1956 and spent much of his life in Southern Vermont.

His talents and contributions were many and varied. He was an accomplished musician, playing viola, guitar, recorders and various keyboards in a wide variety of settings and genres. However, it was in his capacity as a bassist that he achieved the greatest recognition, collaborating with faculty and alumni at Bennington College in welcoming new and challenging musical artists and forms.

Chris loved natural history, particularly astronomy and ornithology. He practiced astronomy as an advanced amateur, and held a near encyclopedic knowledge of the night sky and deep sky objects, which he would study for countless hours. He was enchanted by birds and their behavior, with a special fondness for blue jays and crows, and he developed a patient and consummate skill in photographing them.

In fact, there are few areas on which Chris did not have some knowledge or opinion. Something of a local rhetorician, he loved discussing almost anything. His mastery of language scaled from the simplest of poetic forms to sometimes intense complexity, encompassing multiple foreign language forms, and a passion for etymology and grammar.

His opinions were often strongly stated, but he was also capable of extraordinary charm and wit.

Chris was predeceased by his parents, Drs. Arthur and Bette Faris of Shaftsbury. He is survived by his sister Ann Faris and her son Jaalid Amoroso; his brother Gregory Faris and Gregory's partner, Chrissy Vella; his brother Thomas Faris and Thomas' partner Andrea Mattson.

The family is planning a memorial service at a later date.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Shaftsbury volunteer Fire Department.
