Christopher Jerome Crowell 1923-2010 READSBORO Mr. Christopher Jerome Crowell, 86 of 2877 West Hill Drive, Readsboro, died Sunday November 14, 2010 at Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. He was born in Adams, on December 19, 1923, daughter of Christopher and Christine (Bryn) Crowell. He attended Plainfield schools and Smith Vocational Technical School in Northampton. Mr. Crowell was a decorated veteran of World War II serving with the US Army's 275th Infantry Regiment in Europe. He participated in battles in Naples/Foggia; Rome/Arno; Southern France; Rhineland; and Central Europe. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. He also received the Silver Star; Croix de Guerre; EAME Campaign Ribbon with a Bronze Service Arrowhead; and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant on October 22, 1945. Mr. Crowell was last employed as a carpenter with Fred Squirt in Wilmington, for about 20 years until his retirement. Before that, he worked at the Arnold Print Works, Hathaway Lumber in Monroe; the Town of Readsboro; and the Readsboro Chair Shop. He was a member of the Congregational Church in Plainfield. He was also a member of Post #29 American Legion in Readsboro; the South Readsboro Community Club; and the Readsboro Fire Dept. He enjoyed working on tractors. His wife was the former Rachel Alta Priest, who died on October 6, 1960. They were married on May 21, 1949 in Adams. Survivors include one daughter- Eunice C. Crowell of Readsboro, VT with whom he lived, one brother- Harold Crowell of Plainfield, one brother in law- Norman Nye of Ashfield, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. A sister, Betty Nye and a nephew, William Nye are deceased. FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside service with military honors for Christopher Crowell will be held on Saturday May 14, 2011 at 11 a.m. in the South Readsboro Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
