Christopher Gates 1929 -2008 POWNAL Christopher W. Gates, Sr., 78, resident of State Line Road, died peacefully at his home on Friday afternoon Sept. 5, 2008, he was surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. on Dec. 5, 1929, he was the son of Charles E. and Susan M. Peters Gates, he grew up in Hoosick Falls and attended local schools there. He was a Korean War veteran serving with the Army, following his discharge, he served for many years with the Vermont Army National Guard. He was married to the former Charlotte Jordan in Hoosick Falls on January 17, 1950, they had lived in Bennington prior to relocating to Pownal many years ago. Mr. Gates had been employed at the former General Cable Company in Pownal for 31 years and then retired from the Carroll Cable Company in Williamstown after 5 years with the company. He was a member of the Pownal American Legion Post 90 and had served the Town of Pownal as Constable for 21 years. He was a devoted family man who thoroughly enjoyed attending his children's, and later his grandchildren's ball games. The love of his life, was his wife Charlotte. He loved to watch all the different types of wildlife that would visit his yard and earlier years had enjoyed hunting, he also liked watching car racing. He leaves his beloved wife of 58 years Charlotte Gates of Pownal, sons Christopher W. Gates Jr., of Bennington, George and wife, Julie Gates, of Bennington and Nicholas Gates, of Pownal, daughters Deborah, and husband John George, of Pownal and Rose and husband, Gary Weber, of Pownal, sisters Elsie Gates of Williamstown, Mass., and Edna Richardson of Hancock, Mass., 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, his beloved dog Eddie who he shared with his wife and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by brothers Alfred and Charles Gates, and a sister Hazel Susan Haralambous. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services with military honors will be held at the HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. A memorial reception will follow at the Pownal American Legion Post 90. Friends may call at the HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present, American Legion Post 90 will conduct services at 7pm. Should friends desire memorial gifts in memory of Mr. Gates may be made to the VNA and Hospice of Southwestern Vermont in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
