Claire Jane Haytko

1933-2013 Claire Jane Haytko, 79 a resident of Main Street died Tuesday evening July 9, 2013 at Albany Medical Center following an extended illness.

The daughter of James and Mary Elizabeth (Salerno) Dolphi, she was born in Providence, RI on September 25, 1933. She grew up in Hawthorne, NJ where she graduated high school, she continued studies at Payne Hall and became certified as a Medical Assistant. Claire married Arthur Haytko on May 25, 1963 celebrating their 50th Golden Anniversary this past May with a gathering of their many friends and relatives. Claire and Art moved to Bennington in 1976 where they purchased Adams Hardware on Main Street. Over the years the business evolved into Adams Lock and Security. Claire worked as a Medical Assistant while living in New Jersey, but was most proud to be a stay at home mom raising her children. Claire found great joy in helping children as a school crossing guard working for Cedar Grove (NJ) Police Department. She continued her crossing guard duties in Bennington. Claire was a longtime member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir, a former member of the Bennington Lioness Club and Red Hat Society. Throughout her life she played many musical instruments and had a wonderful singing voice and was a member of the Sweet Adaline's singing group.

She leaves her husband of fifty years Arthur Haytko, sons Arthur W. Haytko and wife Paula of Bennington, John Haytko of Newport News, VA, daughters Elaine Haytko and Patrick DeSalvo of Pownal and Marianne Pruiksma of New Jersey, sisters Jean (Tim) Briede of South Carolina and Ann Wehnert of Wisconsin, grandchildren Zack, Anna, Austin, Hannah and Nicholas, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The Burial Office with Committal will be held on Tuesday July 16 at 10am at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with Reverend Justin Lanier officiating.

Friends may call at the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home on Monday from 6-8pm when the family will be present.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Southwestern Vermont Cancer Center in care of Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home, 213 West Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
