ARLINGTON -- Clara Bernice W. Edgerton, 93, a former longtime resident of West Arlington, died on Thursday evening, March 22, 2007, at The Prospect Nursing Home in North Bennington.

Mrs. Edgerton was born in Sandgate on Aug. 9, 1913. She was the last surviving child of the late Willie O. and Addie (Morey) Wilcox. She attended schools in Sandgate and West Arlington. Before relocating to North Bennington, Mrs. Edgerton lived in Manchester and Ludlow with her daughter, Ardis.

She was married in East Arlington on Sept. 12, 1928, to James M. Edgerton. He passed on March 19, 1979. Throughout her life she enjoyed being in the outdoors, especially gardening, hunting and fishing. Mrs. Edgerton had been a model for the late artist Norman Rockwell and had also been a currier for the Rockwell family. She will be remembered as a wonderful cook. Mrs. Edgerton was a longtime member and supporter of the Chapel on the Green in West Arlington, a member of the Battenkill Grange for more than 50 years and had owned and operated The Covered Bridge Antique Shop in West Arlington.

Mrs. Edgerton leaves her son, James A. “Bud” Edgerton of South Burlington; three daughters, Edith Zindle of Albany, N.Y., Joy Freisatz of Altamont, N.Y., and Ardis Clark of Ocala, Fla., and Ludlow; seven grandchildren, Marshall Clark, Miner Clark, Brenda Clark, Jim Edgerton, Deborah Joy Edgerton, Karen Freisatz White and Peter Freisatz; 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great- grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her five brothers, Orin Wilcox, Kenneth Wilcox, James Wilcox, Cecil Wilcox and Carroll Wilcox; and her six sisters, Elva Morrison, Nina Crandall, Annis Heaney, Doris Wilcox, Elizabeth Hess and Dora Belle Wilcox.

Funeral services for Mrs. Edgerton will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jane Buswell presiding. Burial will take place in the Edgerton family lot in the West Arlington Cemetery in the spring.
