Clarence J. Decker III

1940-2016 Clarence J. Decker III passed away on March 11, 2016 at age 76. He was born in West Arlington, Vermont on January 1, 1940, the son Clarence and Dora (Jones) Decker. He married Elaine Guetti of North Bennington on January 7, 1961 in Arlington. They were married 55 years. Deck attended grade school in West Arlington, then graduated from North Bennington High School. He joined the United States Army before graduation and served 8 years of regular and reserve time, receiving an honorable discharge in 1966. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #323 in Granville, NY. Deck modeled for Norman Rockwell as "The Choir Boy" for Hallmark Christmas cards in the late 40's, "The Postman", "Coming and Going" and "The Four Sea sons" calendar in 1949. He was past member of the State & National Grange, a life member of the Order of the DeMolay, past member of the Pawlet Fire Dept., an NRA Firearms instructor, a VT Fish and Wildlife Hunter Educator for over 35 years, past member of the Rutland County Law Enforcement Association and served on the Board of Trustees for Pawlet Community Church. He was the founder of the Mettowee Valley Community Center for Rupert, Pawlet and Dorset. A 4-H leader for 50 years, and served on the UVM Extension 4-H Shooting Sports Council and as Vice President of the Council. In the 60's he was Civil Defense Chairman for Pawlet, serving for several years. Deck was Pawlet's first Constable and served for 20 years, Pawlet Road Commissioner for 5 years, Selectman for many years, Castleton Highway Supervisor for 7 years, retiring in 2004. He was an avid hunter, loved being in the woods and hunting with his family. He enjoyed holiday gatherings and NASCAR. He bowled for many years in Granville on various teams. Deck was predeceased by his parents, a son Clarence IV, his sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Maurice Matteson. Survivors are his wife Elaine, his daughters Ellen Petty (Dennis), Lorraine "Libby" Panoushek (Randy) and his sons: Winstan "Stan" and his wife Marilyn, Dale and his fiance Jennifer Cross all of Pawlet, Darrell and his wife Carrie of Queensbury, NY, Lyle Decker of Waterford, VT, 18 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister Phyllis Mason (Charles) of Pawlet, several nieces and nephews, and his dog Lady. FUNERAL SERVICE: A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 11AM at the Pawlet Community Church. Burial will follow at Mettowee Cemetery in Pawlet. A reception will be held in the fellowship hall of the Church after the burial. Friends may call on Thursday, March 17 from 4-8 PM at the Robert M King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville, NY. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Mettowee Community Center POB 86, Dorset, VT 05251 or the Oxbow MT. 4-H Shooting Sports, POB 87, W. Rupert, VT 05776.
