Clark R. Harwood 1914 - 2009 BENNINGTON Mr. Clark R. Harwood, 94 , a resident of Silk Road, Bennington, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation, following a long illness. Born in East Rupert, Vt., on July 1, 1914, son of Earl and Edith Johnston Harwood. He received his education in the Rupert schools. Clark married the former Hazel Bostwick, Nov. 28, 1936. Mrs. Harwood died Aug. 11, 1997. Clark's first love was farming. He grew up on the family farm in East Rupert and enjoyed milking and haying. For several years Clark had been employed at Sibley's Machine Shop and the Sprague Electric Company. Mr. Harwood had an entrepreneurial spirit. He first went into business with Leon Snow where, together, they made Brickcrete. He later became a logger and made maple syrup. At the age of 50 he became a caregiver for his parents. While caring for his parents he became interested in real estate and began investing in different real estate transactions. Over the years he purchased and resold over fifty properties. An avid fisherman Mr. Harwood and his best friend, Albert Bell would travel all over the state fishing. They were regulars at Hapgood Pond in Peru, Vt. He leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Clark and Veda Harwood Jr. of Mexico, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy H. and Stanley C. Kemmerer of Burlington, Conn.; three grandchildren, Jeff Brewer of San Diego, Calif., Debbie Rampone of Castleton and Michael Harwood of Springfield, Mass.; two nieces, Priscilla Hard of Florence and Beth Edwards, and her husband, Mack of Glens Falls, N.Y. Clark was pre-deceased by a brother, Walter Hard. FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial services celebrating the life of Clark R. Harwood will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bennington officiating. Burial will take place in the family lot in the Mettowee Valley Cemetery in Pawlet at the convenience of the family. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Clark R. Harwood may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad, through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
