Claudia "Sally" Mulvey

1935-2010 BENNINGTON Claudia "Sally" Saunders Matatt Mulvey, 74, a resident of Safford Street, died Thursday, April 15, 2010, at her residence with her family supporting her. She passed away after a long struggle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and her final illness was pancreatic cancer.

Claudia was a proud 19 year breast cancer survivor.

The fifth child of Lucy Russell Harry Saunders, she was born in Bennington, on Sept. 29, 1935. She received her education in both Vermont and New York schools and at the age of 58, she received her GED.

In earlier years Sally was employed at the Polygraphic Company, Crescent Manor Care Center, Stanley Tools and Generations Day Care.

She was a member of Moose Lodge 1223, Fraternal Order of Eagles 1861 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 13, all of Bennington.

Her children were her greatest interest in her younger years, and she spent most of her time with the four of them. She also enjoyed cooking for everyone and making cookies for the holidays.

She liked tag sales and collecting different things. She loved playing Bingo often and also enjoyed attending the Bennington each year.

She leaves two daughters, Sallye Powers of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and Deborah Rock (Anthony) of Bennington; two sisters, Dorothy Buffum of Rutland, and Mary Baker (Tim) of Dorset; three brothers, Harry Sanders Jr. of Bennington, Clyde Sanders of Shaftsbury, and Frank Sanders of Dresden, Maine; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She also leaves 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren which she loved dearly. Shannon Powers Wickenden, her oldest granddaughter, was a great comfort to her grandmother, visiting often and having get-togethers and birthday parties for her.

Her two daughters spent most of their free time comforting their mother. Debby enjoyed cooking supper every night and has been her caregiver since 2009. Sallye devoted her loving care to her mother and was with her through her most courageous battle.

Ms. Mulvey was predeceased by a daughter and son, Laura Gates and Donald Matatt Jr., and by two sisters, Joan Gallett and Irene Sanders.
