Obituary Condolences

SHAFTSBURY -- Mr. Clayton G. Vadakin, 87, a resident of Main Street, died Saturday, July 26, 2003 in Bennington.

Born in Shaftsbury on Feb. 14, 1916, he was the son of the late Frank and Myrtle (Church) Vadakin. He received his education in North Bennington School.

Mr. Vadakin was first married to the former Juanita Potter on March 16, 1940. She died Nov. 25, 1975. He later married the former Mary L. DeBell Hurley on Sept. 12, 1981. She died April 15, 2003.

In earlier years, Mr. Vadakin was employed at Union Carbide Corp. He later was employed for 30 years at Bijur Lubricating Co. until the time of his retirement in 1981.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Vadakin enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Mary L. Senecal, of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; two sisters, Blanche Harwood of Bennington and Bessie Burgess of Tinmouth; 18 grandchildren, including his two caregivers, Cherie Candib of Bennington and Linda Nichols of Rutland; 38 great-grandchildren; 13 grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Mr. Vadakin was predeceased by a stepson, John R. “Jack” Hurley, a granddaughter, Jackie Lou Crawford and several brothers and sisters.

At the request of Mr. Vadakin, there will be no funeral services held.

Private committal services will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.
