Clifford C. Carpenter

1941-2014 BENNINGTON Clifford C. Carpenter, age 72, a resident of Beech Street in Bennington died on Sunday evening, January 5, 2014 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a long illness. He was born December 22, 1941 in Woodford, VT and was the son of the late Henry and Ruth (Lorette) Carpenter. He received his education in local schools, and attended Bennington High. He married the former Joan Quackenbush on January 3, 1961 in Wurzburg, Germany. Mrs. Carpenter survives. Mr. Carpenter served in the Army in Germany during the early 1960's. Upon returning to Bennington, he was employed at various businesses, and at the time of his retirement was employed at Vermont Composite. Mr. Carpenter was an avid golfer, and fisherman. He was a former bowler and pool shooter. Mr. Carpenter is a member of the American Legion Post #13, in Bennington. He was also a woodworker and loved the outdoors. Survivors besides his wife include two daughters: Kathleen Carpenter of Bennington, Karin Hurley and her husband Andrew of Shaftsbury, VT, four grandchildren Scott Chellis, Jessica Chellis, Christopher Hurley and Meagan Hurley, and two great grandchildren: Layla and Paiton. He leaves two sisters; Marie Ayer and her husband Glendon of Bennington, and Jean Stoessel of Iowa, his brothers Alden Carpenter and his wife Laura of Texas, and Michael Carpenter and his wife Joan of Delaware, as well as several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by one sister Doris and two brothers Roy and Robert. A memorial service will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on January 10, 2014 at 1 o'clock. Friends may call at the funeral home on January 10, 2014 from 12PM until 1PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Mountain Animal Hospital or the Second Chance Animal Shelter through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
