HOOSICK, N.Y. - Clifford E. Surdam, 83, of Route 7 in Potter Hill, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2006, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vt. Born in Shaftsbury, Vt. on Aug. 28, 1923, he was the son of the late Leo M. and Lucy Cornell Surdam and the step-son of the late Anna Springer Surdam. Mr. Surdam was raised in the greater Hoosick area. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific and was the recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was employed as a mason for most of his life working with his father and later with the Mason’s Local in Troy. He retired in 1981 from Oak-Mitsui in Hoosick Falls where he worked in maintenance for 10 years.

He was a member of the Bennington VFW Post #1332, the Bennington Moose Lodge and the Loyal Order of Eagles in Hoosick Falls.

He enjoyed bowling, fishing, horse racing and going to casinos. He looked forward to the annual family clamsteams every year where he made his famous clam chowder which he always referred to as “The best I’ve ever made,” and, “It’s a beauty.”

He was the beloved husband of 57 years of Lorraine A. LeBarron Surdam; loving father of Susan (Nicholas) Sousie, West Hoosick, Joanne M. (Warren) Godkin, Bennington, Vt., Richard L. (Linda) Surdam, Potter Hill, Sandra (Dwayne) Metcalf, North Pownal, Vt., Sharon (Donald) Barber, Pittstown, and the late Richard Earl Surdam; he was the brother of Hazel Springer, Eagle Bridge, Leo Surdam Jr., Hoosick Falls, Betty Hayes, Georgia and the late Richard and Arthur Surdam and Dorothy Ryan; step-brother of Raymond Harrington, Potter Hill, Ramona Gerity,Bennington, Vt., and Helen Rock of North Pownal, Vt.; he is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Robson-Reinfurt Funeral Home, 72 Main Street, Hoosick Falls with the Rev. Donald Childs officiating. Interment will follow in West Hoosick Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.

The Bennington VFW will conduct a wake service at 6:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association in memory of Clifford E. Surdam.
