Clyde G. Burgess, Jr. 1928-2013 BENNINGTON Clyde G. Burgess Jr., 84, a resident of Burgess Road, died Thursday, September 12, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his family. Born in Bennington Sept.15, 1928, he was the son of the late Clyde Sr. and Belle (Briggs) Burgess. He received his education in the local schools and was a 1948 graduate of Bennington High School where he was a member of the Ben-Hi football team. A Navy veteran, Clyde returned to Bennington following his discharge to join the family business, Burgess Brothers Construction. Clyde was associated with the business for over 50 years and served as company president for 40 years until the time of his retirement. Clyde was an avid horseman and trained and drove horses at many racetracks in the area. Very active in the community for many years, he served nine years on the Mt. Anthony Union School Board and was a member of American Legion Post 13, Knights of Columbus Council 307, Bennington Elks Lodge and Bennington Moose Lodge 1233. Survivors include his significant other, Ingrid Walker, of Bennington; a daughter, Peggy Sauer-Gagnon and her husband John Gagnon of Bennington; a daughter, Penny Burgess of Bennington; a granddaughter and four grandsons, Laura Peterson, Russell Peterson and his wife Leah, Glen Sauer and his wife Nicole and their sons Jack and James, Gregory Sauer and his fiance Sharon Klauser, Geoffrey Sauer and his daughter Harper. Survivors also include Ingrid's son, John Walker and his daughter Haley; a niece, Gloria Jean Sausville; and many cousins. Clyde was predeceased by a son-in-law, James Sauer and a sister, Lorraine Howe and her husband Clyde FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 at 12 noon. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Private committal services will take place at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers contributions in Clyde Burgess' memory may be made to VNA & Hospice of Southwestern Vermont Health Care through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
