Clyde D. Howe 1922-2010 BENNINGTON Mr. Clyde D. Howe, 88, a longtime resident of Burgess Road in Bennington died Friday September 17, 2010 at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. Born in Jeffersonville, Vt., August 1, 1922, he was the son of the late Daniel C. and Ila (Melvin) Howe. He received his education in Bennington. Clyde was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army during the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He married the former Lorraine Burgess on October 26, 1941. Mrs. Howe died March 6, 2001. Mr. Howe was a self employed contractor and had built several homes in the Bennington area. He also owned several apartment houses. Mr. and Mrs. Howe enjoyed spending summers at their home on Lake George and winters in Ruskin, Florida. A devoted family man, Clyde also enjoyed traveling, boating and playing cards with friends. He was a former member of the Mount Anthony Lodge # 13 F&M and the former Bennington Club. He was a member of the American Legion Post 13 Survivors include a daughter, Gloria Jean Sausville of Bennington, a granddaughter Wendy Beatty and her husband Marc of Bennington; a grandson, Keith Stoddard and his wife Diane of Stony Brook, Long Island, N.Y.; three great grandchildren, Juliette Beatty of Bennington and Sophia and Samantha Stoddard of Stony Brook; a brother James Howe and his wife Jean of Shaftsbury; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Crosby Howe and four sisters, Lula Sweet, Alice Towslee, Etta Howe and Arlene Joseph. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Monday September 20, 2010 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Friends may call at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Clyde D. Howe may be made to The school of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
