BRIDPORT -- David Canfield Hard, 72, of Jones Dock Road in Bridport, formerly of Arlington, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born in Arlington on April 5, 1932, the son of Gordon Marshall and Dorothy (Crofut) Hard, and attended local schools. He worked for New England Telephone and NYNEX, starting as a lineman and earning his way to supervisor and foreman before retiring. David was a member of the United States Marines, serving in the Korean conflict and earning the rank of staff sergeant in communications.

Mr. Hard was a member of the Masons and the American Legion Post 69 in Arlington. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a huge Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He loved tinkering around the house, but most of all loved the water and boating from his home in Bridport.

Hard of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Lureen George of Hoosick Falls, N.Y. and Diana Barrows of Rutland; a brother, Jeffrey Hard of Richmond; four sisters, Jean Campbell of Pownal, Priscilla Nacy of Upper Darby, Pa., Alice Hartigan of Stowe and Sara Grey of Castleton; seven grandchildren; and three stepchildren, Thomas Chase Jr. and Cheryl and Prince Chase. He was preceded in death by his brother Gordon Hard.

A celebration of Mr. Hard’s life will be held Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. at Hanson-Walbridge Arlington Chapel, Route 7A, Arlington. The Rev. John Mitchell of Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester will conduct the service. Interment will follow in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery. There are no visiting hours.
