David N. Downey

1939-2013 BENNINGTON David N. Downey, 74, a resident of Hardwood Hill in Bennington, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday February 27, 2013 at his home.

David was born in Kearny, New Jersey on February 12, 1939 the son of the late Neil and Dorothy (Mitchel) Downey and attended Kearny, New Jersey schools. David served his country as a member of the United States Navy during Viet-Nam and upon being honorably discharged entered the United States Army Reserves retiring after twenty years of service.

David worked as a production worker for many years for Globe Union (Johnson Controls) in Bennington. David was a member of the Free & Accepted Masons, Mt. Anthony Lodge in Bennington and was an avid reader. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, especially at the ocean, riding motorcycles, tinkering on cars and traveling. He enjoyed the sounds of Big Band era music and listening to country and western music.

David is survived by his wife, the former Linda Thomas whom he married in Bennington in 1962, his children Michael Downey, James Downey and his significant other Jodi Stewart and Melissa Downey-Kennedy and her husband Kelly all of Bennington, and his grandchildren Douglas Downey and Michael and Matthew Kennedy. He was preceded in death by his brother Bruce Downey.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A celebration of the life of David N. Downey will be held Saturday March 2, 2013 at 11am at Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home 213 West Main Street Bennington, Vermont, where military honors will be accorded. Rev. Mary Lee Clark of the Second Congregational Church in Bennington will officiate. Interment will be private. A visiting hour will be held at the funeral home Saturday March 2, 2013 from 10 to 11 a.m., one hour prior to the service. If friends desire, memorial gifts in David's memory may be made to The Second Chance Animal Shelter or the Bennington Rescue Squad, c/o Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home P.O.
