Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- David L. Mercier, 65, a resident of Division Street, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003 at Albany (N.Y.) Veterans Administration Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington May 22, 1938, he was the son of the late Joseph L. and Irene M. (LaCroix) Mercier. He received his early education in the Bennington schools and was a graduate of the former Bennington High School. He later attended Vermont Technical College in Randolph where he received an engineering degree. He also attended Southern Vermont College, Worcester State University, and Clark University where he received a certificate in Technical Writing.

A Vietnam veteran, Dave served in the U.S. Army infantry from April 22, 1966 until Dec. 15, 1967 and again from June 20, 1968 until June 9, 1971. He served a tour in Vietnam from Oct. 7, 1966 until Sept. 29, 1967. He also served in Korea from 1970 until 1971.

Prior to his retirement he was employed as a technical writer at Cincinnati Milicron, General Electric and Simmons Machine Tool.

A member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington, he also was a member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks No. 567 and the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Dave’s favorite pastimes were home repair, photography and auto mechanics.

Survivors include two sisters, Juliette Theresa Mercier Hurt of Apache Junction, Ariz. and Linda Marie Mercier of Durhamville, N.Y.; two nieces, Audrey Lynn Hurt of Valley Park, Mo. and Shannon Marie Steinbrecher of Durhamville, N.Y.; two nephews, David Joseph Marsala of Durhamville, N.Y. and John Joseph Hurt of Gladstone, Mo. and several cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be offered Friday evening.

Burial will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Contributions in David L. Mercier’s memory may be made to either the BPOE Silver Towers program or the National Kidney Foundation through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

All members of Bennington Elks Lodge 567 are requested to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday evening at 7 p.m. to conduct services in memory of David Mercier.
