POWNAL -- David Lawrence O’Dell, 57, a resident of Route 346, died peacefully at his home onTuesday morning, Jan. 22, 2008, following a brief illness.

He was surrounded by his loving family.

David was born in North Adams, Mass. on Oct. 14, 1950, the only child born to the late Lawrence Lincoln and Harriet Bertha (Wilcox) O’Dell. David grew up in Pownal in his present home, he attended Pownal Elementary School and was a 1968 graduate of Bennington High School.

He married the former Penny Nichols at the Pownal United Methodist Church on Sept. 23, 1972. In earlier years, David had worked at the former Globe Union, Green Mountain Race Track and Pownal Tanning Co. for 14 years, retiring from the Engineering Department at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in 2002 after 12 years of service.

David was a member of the Pownal United Methodist Church and a 36-year member of the Pownal Valley Fire Protective Association where he began his firefighting career as a junior firefighter, climbing through the ranks from firefighter to captain to engineer to assistant chief to chief and president of the department. He continued to be involved in the department throughout his life and was instrumental in the design of the new Fire Protection Facility.

David enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, following his retirement he enjoyed puttering around his home and experimenting with cooking. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and attending the races at Lebanon Valley Speedway every Saturday night.

David leaves his wife, Penny O’Dell, of Pownal; two daughters, Shannon Harkins of Pownal and Heather O’Dell and her companion Wayne Jelley of Pittsfield, Mass.; his grandchildren, Jake and Shelby Harkins of Pownal and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by a granddaughter, Michaela Elizabeth Harkins, who died Oct. 15, 1994.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at noon at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington. Conducting the service will be the Rev. Gaylord Campbell. Burial will take place in the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery in the spring.

A memorial reception will follow the funeral service at the Pownal American Legion hall. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present.
