Obituary Condolences

POWNAL -- Funeral services for David L. O’Dell were held at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Friday afternoon with the Reverend Gaylord Campbell former pastor of the Pownal United Methodist Church officiating.

Reverend Campbell reflected upon David’s devotion to his family and the Pownal Fire Department, he also recited poems entitled “Daddy’s Day” and “Test of the Masters Hand.” The eulogy, which contained many messages from David, was given by his daughters Heather and Shannon.

Special musical selections selected by David were “Dream Lover,” “Cherish” and “Stand By Me.” These songs were special to both David and his wife, Penny.

Serving as bearers were William Haag, Robert Wilcox, Sam Pettibone, Craig O’Dell, Jerry Gregory, Gary Niles and David Woodcock as honorary bearer.

David was transported aboard Pownal Fire Department Truck 16 to the Pownal Fire Department headquarters, where he was honored with the “Last Call” of his firefighting career, the funeral cortege was escorted by Pownal Fire Department truck 15.

A memorial gathering followed at the Pownal American Legion Hall.

Burial with committal prayers will take place in the Oak Hill Cemetery in the spring.

During the calling hours and funeral service an honor guard stood by David’s casket. Among the many fire departments and rescue squads attending the service and calling hours for the former Pownal Fire Chief, were departments from throughout Bennington County and adjacent Massachusetts.

Mr. David O’Dell died peacefully at his home on Jan. 22 surrounded by his loving family, he was 57.
