Deborah Ann Mattison 1952-2011 SHAFTSBURY Deborah Ann Mattison, 58, a resident of Rod & Gun Club Road in Shaftsbury, where she resided with family died Sunday January 16, 2011 at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bennington. She was born at the Fort Bragg Army Hospital in Fayetteville, North Carolina February 20, 1952. She was the daughter of Richard and Lorraine (Moriarty) Mattison. Debbie received her education in Bennington and was a 1970 graduate of Mount Anthony Union High School and a 1972 graduate of Champlain College in Burlington. Having been self employed much of her adult life Debbie most recently work and resided in California. She was a master of the healing arts. With over 30 years of formal training she never stopped studying and perfecting various treatments helping people overcome their challenges. Some formal training included Therapeutic Deep Tissue Massage, Shiatsu, Jin Shin Do, Jin Shin Jyutsu, Craniosacral Therapy and most recently Somatic Experiencing, a method of trauma healing for PTSD. Her gifted abilities and unwavering optimism helped many people from all walks of life. She will be greatly missed by her piers, clients, family and friends. Debbie loved gardening, hiking, taking walks and spending time outdoors. She was a trained athlete and competed in the New York Marathon. Growing up she made her mark in the horse world, competing heavily throughout New England. She was most greatful for having horses be such a big part of her growing up. She was looking forward to having them in her life again. Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth and Alonya Schauer of Scottsdale, Arizona. Her parents Richard and Lorraine Mattison of Shaftsbury. A sister Denise Rifenburg and her husband Jack of Brunswick, N.Y. A brother Rick Mattison and his wife Serena of Shaftsbury. Several nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Thursday Jan. 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday January 21, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Penny Rich Smith officiating. The burial will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery in the spring. If friends desire contributions in memory of Deborah Ann Mattison may be made to the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201
