Delia Patricia O'Dowd MANCHESTER Delia Patricia O'Dowd, 101, a resident of Equinox Terrace in Manchester, Vt., died Tuesday March 6, 2012 at her residence. She was born in Leitrim, Ireland March 17, 1910. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Delia (McNamara) O'Dowd. Delia received most of her education in Ireland. After emigrating to the United States, she attended and graduated from New York University School of Nursing. Delia was a registered nurse working in several large hospitals and psychiatric facilities in the New York Area. Delia, along with her sister Maude, owned and operated a successful nursing home in Flushing, New York. In 1969 Delia received the Achievement Award in recognition of her outstanding performance as a registered professional nurse in the field of mental health and geriatrics. Delia enjoyed traveling , many times back to her native Ireland. Her family was her main interest. She often hosted her many nieces and nephews in the home she shared on Brightwood Road with her sister Sheila. In her day, she enjoyed the 1811 House and many of the restaurants in Manchester. But none of those restaurants could rival her famous lasagna and trifel. Survivors include a sister, Maureen Barrett and dear sister-in-law, Rosetta O'Dowd, both of Ireland. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins in Ireland including her niece Mary O'Dowd of Dublin and cousins Cathy Donovan of Harrison, N.Y., Frank Sutton of Manchester, Vt., and Kathleen McNerney of Ballston Spa, N.Y., who was her God-daughter. She was pre-deceased by three sisters, Eileen , Kathleen and Sheila O'Dowd and two brothers John and Raymond O'Dowd. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from St. Paul's Church in Manchester, VT on Saturday, March 12, 2012, which would have been Delia's 102nd birthday, at 10 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. The burial will take place in the family lot in Factory Point Cemetery in Manchester.
