Obituary Condolences

Dennis Butchko 1946 - 2012 WILMINGTON, VT Dennis Butchko, loving son, husband, father and friend, died peacefully on the evening of Saturday, March 3rd, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family and friends, and fought bravely to the end. Dennis was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA on April 11th, 1946, to Stephen and Margaret (Kotulk) Butchko. After graduating from Nutley High School in New Jersey, he attended Windham College in Putney, VT and graduated in 1968 with a degree in psychology. He went on to earn a master's degree in school administration in 1974 and later earned a certificate of advanced graduate study in administration and planning in 1987. Dennis was the teaching principal at Halifax Elementary School from 1968 to 1971. From 1971 to 1987, he was the teaching principal at Readsboro Central School. He then went back into the classroom full time in 1987 as a 7th and 8th grade teacher, until his retirement in 2008. Teaching and helping his students meant a great deal to Dennis. Judging by the many letters and visits to Dennis by former students before and during his illness, he also had a great impact on many of their lives. Dennis was an active member of the Deerfield Valley community for many years. He belonged to the Wilmington Lion's Club, served on the zoning board, and was member of the Rotary Club. He also volunteered at Mount Snow as an Ambassador for more than 20 years. He touched the lives of many through his generosity, humor and guidance, and got his greatest joy from helping and being with others and by making them laugh. That joy was given to him in spades. Dennis loved life, and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed every season, as a passionate skier, an ardent fly fisherman, a hunter, gardener, and watercolorist. He was constantly working in his yard, and appreciated nature in all manifestations. Dennis is survived by his mother, Margaret, his loving wife, Betty, his daughter, Amy, his sister, Janet Petrucci of Dallas, TX, and by a large extended family. His memory and his spirit will live on through them and through his many loving friends and students. FUNERAL NOTICE: Viewing hours will be held Tuesday evening, March 6th, from 4PM to 7PM at COVEY & ALLEN FUNERAL HOME, (44 East Main Street in Wilmington). Services will be held on Wednesday, March 7th at 11AM at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, (96 East Main Street). There will be a celebration of Dennis' life to follow at 1PM at The Red Mill (18 North Main Street). In lieu of flowers, we respectfully request donations be made to either the Dennis Butchko Scholarship Fund via the Rotary Club of the Deerfield Valley, or to Hospice Services at Grace Cottage Hospital, c/o Covey & Allen Funeral Home, P.O.
