WHITE CREEK, N.Y. -- Donald B. “Ben” Niles Jr., 61, a resident of Lincoln Hill Road, White Creek, N.Y., died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington on Oct. 10, 1946, he was the son of the late Donald B. Niles Sr. and Margaret C. (Case) Niles.

Ben received his education in the Hoosick Falls schools and was a 1963 graduate of Hoosick Falls Central School.

In 1965, Ben graduated from SUNY Cobleskill in Cobleskill, New York.

He married the former Susan Shaughnessy in Florence, Mass. on Aug. 12, 1967.

For many years, Ben owned and operated the family farm in White Creek. He later was employed by Phil Harrington Construction for several years. At the time of his illness, Ben was employed by St. Gobain in Hoosick Falls.

A very active member of the community for many years, Ben was a 40-year retired member of the White Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He served on the school board at Hoosick Falls Central from 1974 -1986.

Ben was a longtime member of the Jermain United Methodist Church and was a also a member of the Board of Directors at Jermain Hall in White Creek.

He coached both his son and grandson in the Hoosick Falls Little League and was a member of Windy Hills Golf Club in Greenwich, N.Y.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Niles, a daughter and son-in-law, Brooke and Jay Williams and a son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Tracy Niles and three grandchildren, Tanner and Carsen Williams and Rylie Niles, all of White Creek; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda M. and David Lamb of Chittenango, N.Y. and Heather K. and Ed Flynn of Walloomsac, N.Y.; his mother-in-law, Margaret Shaughnessy of Bennington; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Deborah Estey, former pastor of the Jermain United Methodist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Rosewood Cemetery, White Creek, N.Y.
