Donald J. Cardany, Sr. 1922 - 2011 BENNINGTON, VT Donald J. Cardany, Sr., a former resident of Pleasant Street, Bennington, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, on his 89th birthday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albany, N.Y., following a long illness. Born in Troy, N.Y., Aug. 27, 1922, son of Alfred W. and Marie Antoinette (Duchaneau) Cardany, Sr., he received his education in Troy. A World War II veteran, Don served in the Navy during that time. In earlier years he was employed at Interstate Signs in Albany, N.Y., and later at the Stanley Tools plant in Shaftsbury. He married the former Alice Macomber on Nov. 23, 1944. She died on June 23, 1972. He later married the former Louise (Pellerin) Elwell in Bennington on Dec. 21, 1974. Mrs. Cardany died on Dec. 27, 2008. Survivors include five children, Donald J. Cardany, Jr., of Wapwallopen, Pa, Donna M. Bristol of Lansingburgh, N.Y., Dale J. Cardany of Clifton Park, N.Y., Deborah A. Larson of Hudson Falls, N.Y., and Dana M. Cardany of Waterford, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Breen of Pittstown, N.Y., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife, Don was also predeceased by a brother, Alfred Cardany, Jr. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011 at 12 p.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 12:30 p.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. till 12:00 p.m. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Should friends desire, contributions in Donald J. Cardany Sr.'s memory may be made to the Alzheimers and Related Disorders Foundation or the Veterans Administration Hospital through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
