Donald L. Carroll

1935 - 2013 SHAFTSBURY Donald L. Carroll, 77, a resident of Route 7A, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, following a long illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bennington on Oct. 6, 1935, he was the son of the late Leroy and Selina (Wennett) Carroll. Don received his education in the Bennington schools and was a 1954 graduate of Bennington High School. In earlier years, Don was employed at General Cable Company and later by the Green Mountain Chapter, American Red Cross for ten years. At that point in his life, Don and Cindy moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he was employed at Myrtle Beach Manor for 11 years. Following his retirement, Don returned to Bennington to be near family members. Don was an avid fan of NASCAR racing. Survivors include his wife, Cindy Gardner of Shaftsbury, whom he married June 13, 2011; his children, Rick Carroll and his fiance, Dianna Leazer of Bennington, Timothy Carroll of Garden City, S.C., Angela Griffin of Shaftsbury, and Lana Burke and her husband, Mike of Bennington; eight grandchildren, Whitney and Noah Carroll and their mother, Rhoda Wells, Matt Carroll and his fiance, Nicole, and his mother, Liz Carroll; Chloe, Hannah and Jordan Griffin and Brandan and Caitlyn Burke. Don was predeceased by his son, Michael Carroll, and by his former wife, Dorothy Carroll. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR SON FUNERAL HOME on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at 1 p.m. Friends may call the funeral home on Friday from 11 a.m.. until the time of the service. Private committal services will take place at the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Should friends desire, contributions in Donald L. Carroll's memory may be made to either the Vermont Heart Association or the Green Mountain Chapter of the Alzheimer's Disease Association through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
