Donald A. Cherbonneau 1925-2011 NORTH BENNINGTON Mr. Donald A. Cherbonneau, 85, a former longtime resident of North Bennington, Vt. and more recently of Derry, N.H. died Thursday, February 24, 2011 at his residence in Derry surrounded by his family. He was born in North Bennington, Vt. Sept. 7, 1925, the son of the late Chester and Grace (Hathaway) Cherbonneau. He received his education in North Bennington and was a 1943 graduate of North Bennington High School. Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended Middlebury College under the Navy V12 program. During World War II Don was stationed in the Phillipines until he was honorably discharged in 1946. He married the former Shirley Harrington in 1948. Together they owned and operated the North Bennington Variety Store for several years. For 27 years Don was employed as Postmaster at the North Bennington Post Office retiring on June 2, 1989. He was a member of the Norshaft Lions Club and the Bennington Lodge of Elks. An avid Boston Red Sox fan, Don also enjoyed playing golf and was a collector of stamps.. Don and Shirley moved to Derry, N.H. in 2004 to be closer to their children and grandchildren, they rarely missed a game or performance and were a large part of their lives. Don loved to talk to people and made many friends along life's journey. Survivors include his wife Shirley Cherbonneau of Derry, N.H.; their children, Pam Keefe and her husband, Tim, of Weare, N.H., Craig Cherbonneau of Derry and Mark Cherbonneau and his wife, Kristine, of Derry; five grandchildren Courtney Benevides and her husband Christopher of Cheshire, Conn., Ryan Keefe of Essex, Vt., Nicole Cherbonneau of Raleigh, N.C., Tyler Cherbonneau of Nashua, N.H. and Kyle and Brett Cherbonneau of Derry, N.H. Three great grandchildren; A sister Dorothy Hurley and her husband Frank of Bennington and several nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service to celebrate Don's life will be held at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at noon. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. The burial will follow in the family lot in Grandview Cemetery. If friends desire contributions in memory of Donald A. Cherbonneau may be made to the Make a Wish Foundation through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
