Donald R. Davis

1930-2012 Donald R. Davis, 82, of North Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly of Pownal, Vt., died Monday, January 7, 2013 at home, after a long illness.

Born in Ballston Spa, N.Y., on July, 19, 1930, he was the son of the late Perry K Davis and Mildred (Whitamore) Davis. On April 7, 1951, he married Beverly Dow of Orleans Vt., in Lebanon, N.H.

He attended the school of hard knocks and started his career in the restaurant business at age 16 as a dishwasher at the Grand Union Hotel in Saratoga Springs, NY. He went on to become a cook, chef and then chef/owner. Don & Bev owned the Ladd Brook Restaurant in Pownal VT from 1964 -1981 which was a very popular stop during the Green Mountain Race Track heyday.

After they sold the restaurant to the American Legion, he continued to work as a chef after moving permanently to his home in Florida finally retiring in 1994.

Donald's interests included cooking, baking, woodworking and painting. He enjoyed hunting, golfing and bowling as a younger man.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly and sons; Rick and his wife Melissa (Baker) Davis, of Sebring Fla., Jeff of North Fort Myers Fla., and Jon of Bennington Vt. Their first son, Dan Michael died February 3rd, 1960.

Donald is also survived by a brother, Paul and predeceased by a sister, Marjorie.

Donald was the beloved grandfather to Michael, Jason, Donald E, Kira, Dan, Tom, Sarah and Matthew Davis; Jennifer (Davis) Steinhoff, Kristen (Davis) Galenus, Julie (Davis) Stump, nieces Holly (Davis) Gaiser, Kelly (Davis) Peal and Debra (Goodhue) Chandler, Karen Goodhue, nephews Mark Davis, JD Wolf and Michael Reed, Steve, Kevin, Tim, and Greg Goodhue, and 14 great-grandchildren.
