BENNINGTON -- Donald E. “Gibby” Greene, 63, a resident of Applegate Apartments, died suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2006, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Born in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. on Nov. 19, 1942, he was the son of the late Donald E. Greene and the former Daphne (Squires) Greene Restino. He received his education in the Shaftsbury schools.

Gibby married the former Mary McDonald on Sept. 25, 1993, in Pownal. At the time of his death he was employed at HBH Prestain in Arlington.

Gibby was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed ice fishing, hunting with family and friends, playing horseshoes and attending baseball games. He also enjoyed going to stock car races with his daughter-in-law, Misty King, and was a great fan of “Larry the Cable Guy,” whose shows he often attended.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Greene of Bennington; five children, Leroy Greene of Ferrisburgh, Matthew Greene, Jessie King, Donald King and Patricia Moffitt, all of Bennington; his stepmother, Elizabeth M. Greene of Shaftsbury; 19 grandchildren, Kaylee, Shaleah, Matthew Jr., Celia, Jeff, Michelle, Dakota, Bryce, Tanner, Katlin, Michael, Trinity, Crystal, Nelson II, Lissa, Heather, Patrick Jr., Jeremy and Shelby; eight brothers and sisters, Peter A. Greene of Pawlet, Gary E. Greene of Bennington, Anthony D. Greene of Brattleboro, David A. Greene of Bennington, Samuel P. Greene of Bennington, Donna Lee Greene of Ellsworth, Maine, Patricia L. Greene of Woodford and John Whitehill of Middlebury; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

He is also survived by five very close friends, Ted Bourn, Ron Elwell, Mike Smith, Bob Foster and Bob Phillips. Gibby was predeceased by two sisters, Susan Smead and Pauline Pardon.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Arnet Mathers, pastor of the Southwestern Vermont District Seventh Day Adventist Churches, officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury in the spring.
