POWNAL -- Donald E. “Stoney” Stone, 60, a resident of Maple Grove Road in Pownal, died peacefully on Sunday morning, Dec. 23, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Stoney was born in Bath, N.Y., and was the son of the late Duty Stone and Anna (Minnerly) Herman. He re-ceived his education in Puletney, N.Y., where he grew up on the family farm.

In 1964 he joined the Army where he served until 1969. He was stationed in Germany and worked as a heavy equipment mechanic.

He returned to western New York state and worked various jobs to support his family. In the early 1970s he moved to the Cambridge-Johnsonville, N.Y., area, and eventually to Bennington.

He married the former Pamela Sweet on Jan. 16, 1982, in Bennington.

For several years Stoney had been employed at Salem Farm Supply Salem, N.Y., at Delurey’s Sales and Service in Hoosick, and Johnson Controls in Bennington. He later owned and operated Stoney’s Repair, and prior to his retirement, due to ill health he had been employed by the Pownal Highway Department.

The family has resided in Pownal for 25 years.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 13 in Bennington, and a member of the Western Massachusetts Tractor Pullers Association and the Tri State Antique Tractor Club.

Tractor pulling was his passion. Through tractor pulling he has made many wonderful friends and many great memories.

Stoney leaves his wife of 26 years, Pamela, a son Robin Stone of Richmond, Va., a daughter and son-in-law, Sheri and Chris Cummings of Canandaiguia, N.Y., a son Kevin Stone of Anchorage, Alaska, a daughter, Kaleena Robertson and her husband David of White Creek, N.Y., and a daughter Cassandra Stone of Pownal; a brother, David Stone, and his wife Judy of Puletney, N.Y.

He leaves eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Two uncles Rodney Stone of Campbell, N.Y., and Ray Stone of New Jersey. An aunt, Betty Wagner of Bath, N.Y., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington. Immediately following a celebration of Stoney’s life will be held at the American Legion Post 90 in Pownal. For details contact Penny Willette at 823-5337.
