Donald F. King 1925 - 2008 READSBORO, Vt. - Donald Francis King, 82, a lifelong resident of King Hill Road, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon Feb. 6, 2008 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Manchester, Vt., on Aug. 21, 1925, son of Guy C. and Grace L. Shippee King. Don's family moved to the farm in Readsboro in 1927. He received his early education in Readsboro schools, graduating from Readsboro High School, class of 1940 and Vermont Technical College in 1942. Don worked alongside his father until his father's death in 1960 when he took over the day-to-day operation of the farm with his two sons, Peter and Thomas, until their deaths. Don loved his work on the farm and spending time with family, especially his children and grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor, loved to tell a good joke and enjoyed reading and poetry. Don began serving the people of Readsboro in 1950 as Town Lister and was a former Selectman, School Director, Town Agent, Grand Juror and Justice of the Peace. Don also served on the Cemetery Commission and was a Library Trustee. Don was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Soil Conservation Program and the Readsboro Couples Club. Don and his wife, Evelyn have been members of the First Baptist Church of Readsboro for over 50 years. He leaves his wife the former Evelyn Cook, whom he married at the Whitingham Community Church on May 27, 1951; his daughter, Carol Reed, and her husband, Allan "Skip" Reed, Jr. of Bennington; his brother Halbert King of Port Angeles, Wash.; his sister, Marion Wright of Cedaredge, Colo.; his grandsons, Brian Reed, a student at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, and Adam Reed of Bennington, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sons, Peter who died in 1977, and Thomas who died in 1995; his brothers, George Tanner, Guy King, Jr. and Richard King, and his sisters, Mildred Jillson and Helen Chapin.
