1925 - 2015 BENNINGTON Donald Charles Hicks, 89, a well-known resident of Gore Road, died Thursday, August 20, 2015 at his residence. He was born in Bennington on September 6, 1925. He was the son of the late Charles and Grace (Percy) Hicks. Don received his education in Bennington and was a 1943 graduate of Bennington High School. Don attended Champlain College and later graduated from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. in 1950 A World War II veteran, Don served in the 86th Infantry of the United States Army. He served overseas in both the European Theater and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations. For his service to his country Don was awarded the Bronze Star for conspicuous bravery in the field of action. He married the former Frances Bishop October 20, 1956 at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Don was initially employed at Quinlan's Drug Store in Bennington and had served as Executive Director of the Greater Bennington Chamber of Commerce. He spent most of his career as Business Manager at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Montpelier. Don served as Deputy Commandant of the Vermont Veterans Home upon his return to Bennington. He accepted a job at Hemming's Motor News where he retired at the age of 78. Don served on several Boards, including the Village of Bennington where he served as President of the Village from 1959 until 1962. He was also a member of the Town of Bennington Planning Commission from 1989 to 2000, where he served as chairman for 10 years. Don proudly served his town, his state and his country. Don was a 60 year member of the First United Methodist Church of Bennington and a life member of the American Legion Post 13, the VFW Post 1332 and the Montpelier, VT Elks Lodge. He enjoyed reading, listening to jazz music and going to the Saratoga Race Track, but his family was the most important to him. Survivors include his wife, Frances B. Hicks of Bennington, a daughter, Martha Hicks-Robinson of Nashville, Tennessee and a son, Charles R. Hicks of Dorset, VT, two grandchildren, Caitlin Robinson and Bridget Robinson Obrynba, a great-grandson, Isaac John Obrynba and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, John Donald Hicks, a granddaughter, Ellen Bindman-Hicks; three brothers, Arthur, Earl and Harold Hicks and a sister, Marion Rivers. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Noon with the Rev. Richard McSherry officiating. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday from 11a.m. until the time of the service. The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery where military honors will be offered. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Donald C. Hicks may be made to either the VNA and Hospice or the Vermont Veterans Home Activities Fund through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
