WINDHAM -- Donald J. Merrow, 79, of Windham, died the morning of Sunday Jan. 21, 2007.

Donald was born in Mt. Tabor on May 7, 1927. He was the son of Viola (Wells) and Harry Merrow and was one of 11 siblings. His early education and work were in the Danby/Mt. Tabor areas.

In 1944, he joined the Navy and saw war-time action in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Tolman, a mine sweeper/destroyer. He was deployed to witness the after-affects of the A-Bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945-1946.

Returning home after his service duty, he met and married Agnes L. Williams in 1947 in Manchester.

He also worked throughout the United States as a specialist and erection engineer of related industrial machinery. In 1973, Don semi-retired back to Vermont, settling in South Londonderry.

There, he enjoyed working with his brothers in the masonry and construction fields. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, with many proud catches and trophies.

He was pre-deceased by his wife, Agnes, in 2002; his brothers Eugene, Richard and Robert have also passed.

He is survived by his son, Donald; and two grandchildren. Donald is also survived by his best friend and partner of many years, Priscilla Eaton of Windham. He also leaves brothers Henry, George, Kenneth and Thomas and sisters Betty (Chartier), MaryLou (Woodruff) and Nancy and their families.

A celebration of life will be held for family and friends on May 5, 2007.

Cremation arrangements will be handled by Adams & Kenney Funeral Home of Chester. There will be no calling hours. Donations in Donald’s name can be sent to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1460, Williston, VT 05495.
