NORTH MONMOUTH, Maine -- Donald John Keeler, 83, of North Monmouth, peacefully passed away in his sleep Friday evening, March 4, 2005, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, having spoken individually through the day with all his immediate family.

He was born in Troy, N.Y., on April 29, 1921, the son of Wilbert R. and Alice C. (Teal) Keeler.

On Dec. 24, 1947, Donald married Joyce Bentley, the daughter of Frank W. and Mildred I. (Carey) Bentley of Arlington, Vt.

He was a longtime resident of upstate New York before relocating to Maine in 1975. He was a veteran of the Navy, serving in the Pacific theater, in the Philippines, from 1944 to 1946 during World War II.

Donald was a man of many interests, overcoming his eventual blindness by staying active. He held a pilot’s license for many years and was a beekeeper and licensed ham radio operator. He loved animals, birds and nature, and especially his children.

Mr. Keeler is survived by his wife and partner of 57 years, Joyce Bentley Keeler; his sons, Zane W. Keeler and his wife Debra of Monmouth and Jay D. Keeler and his wife Jodi of Florida; his daughters, Holly K. Thompson of Glenville, N.Y. and Enid A. Drew and her husband George of Poestenkill, N.Y.; a brother, Holman N. Keeler of Ballston Lake, N.Y.; a sister, Thelma Boettger of Troy; along with seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with military honors will be held in the spring in the new Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery.
