Donald C. Johnson

1928-2013 Donald C. Johnson, 85, a resident of Pine Circle in Bennington died peacefully Wednesday November 13, 2013 at the Albany Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born in Rutland, Vermont September 29, 1928. He was the son of the late Gerhardt and Alice (Blue) Johnson. Don received his education in Rutland and was a 1947 graduate of Rutland High School. In 1949 he graduated from Albany Business College. From 1950 to 1953 Don served in the United States Army, stationed at Ft. Eustis, VA. Following his service Don attended Bryant College where he graduated in 1955 with an accounting degree. Mr. Johnson married the former Lucy W. Beach on July 25, 1953 in Williamstown, MA. Mrs. Johnson died March 1, 2000. Over the years Don was employed at various businesses including, H. Greenberg and Sons, Garrison Printing and Chemical Fabrics. In 1970 he opened the first Dunkin Donuts in Bennington. He later worked at Bennington Potters and for many years was employed as an accountant at Robert J. Dimke Associates and Fieden & Greenberg from which he retired. An avid sports enthusiast. Mr. Johnson enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events. He was a Boston Red Sox and Washington Redskins fan. He also enjoyed playing Bridge with his wife and friends. Survivors include a daughter and son in law, Judith R. and Russell C. Pembroke of Bennington, a son and daughter in law Thomas B. and Jessica A. Johnson of Rochester, VT; Five grandchildren, Taylor, Christopher and Cassidy Johnson and Ryan and Kendra Pembroke along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a sister Jean Russell who died in 1989. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church on Monday November 18, at 10:00 am with Rev. Justin Lanier, Rector, officiating. The burial with military honors will be private at the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Sunday November 17 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Should friends desire, contributions in memory of Donald C. Johnson may be made to St. Peters Episcopal Church through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
