SUNDERLAND -- Donald Leroy Ennis, 93, a lifelong resident of Sunderland Hill Road, died Friday evening, Nov. 19, 2004, at Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington. Mr. Ennis was born at the family home in Sunderland on July 8, 1911; he was the last surviving child born to the late Edward and Ruth (Buck) Ennis.

Growing up in Sunderland, he attended local schools and established Don Ennis and Son Auto Sales. In addition, he also maintained an auto salvage business.

In later years, he had worked at the former Globe Union and at Morse Block Company, both in Bennington. He was married to Dorothy “Helen” Kesick in September 1930 in Manchester; she died Oct. 11, 1987.

Mr. Ennis was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church in Arlington. In his younger years, he enjoyed motorcycle racing and had been a car enthusiast throughout his life. With “the gift of gab,” he was a great storyteller and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He enjoyed meeting new people and the company of his large family. He had served as head of the Democratic Party for the town of Sunderland and also had served as constable. For many years, he and his wife Helen had wintered in Florida.

He leaves two sons, Lewis Ennis and Anthony Ennis, both of Sunderland; five daughters, Anna Moss of Sunderland, Priscilla Hall of Bennington, Jeanette Cyphers of Halfmoon, N.Y., Dorothy Guber of Sunderland and Donna Hewes of Lakeland, Fla.; 26 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by three sons, Edward Ennis who died June 15, 2001, Clifford Ennis who died Sept. 11, 1969 and Donald Richard Ennis, who died in infancy; four brothers, James, Paul, David and Henry Ennis; and four sisters, Gertrude “Pat” Bolster, Mary Touchette, Pauline Johnson and Anna Thayer.

The liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated from St. Margaret Mary’s Church on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. George Dupuis, pastor, officiating. Burial with committal prayers will follow in the Ennis family lot in Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland. The family will receive friends in the church hall immediately following the burial service for a time of fellowship and refreshment. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home Arlington Chapel on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m., when the family will be present.

The vigil service will take place at 6 p.m.

Memorial gifts may be made in memory of Mr. Ennis to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 528, Arlington VT 05250.
