MESA, Ariz. -- Mr. Donald Joseph Lever, 73, passed away in Mesa on Oct. 4, 2004. Donald was born in Bennington, Vt., on March 24, 1931, to Raymond and Mary Lever. It was his wish to be reunited with his parents as his final resting place.

Donald was a POW in the Korean War for 33 months. He was a true town hero. Upon his return, the town of Bennington honored his contribution to his country with a parade, key to the town and a new Studebaker. Donald was married to the former Diana Foucher, the mother of his children: Donna Hartman, Vanessa Stitt, Roxana Davis, Victoria Porter, Melissa Lever, Donald Lever Jr. and Kenneth Lever; also surviving are his uncle Frank Monroe, 21 grandchildren, 22 great- grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Donald was predeceased by his daughter, Linda Knapp; grandsons, Francis Patrick Knapp Jr., and Donald Ray Porter Jr.; and his sister, Zane Tobin.

There will be a graveside service for Donald on Wednesday evening, July 27, at 6 p.m. at Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington, with full military honors. This date is the 52nd anniversary of the end of the Korean War, July 27, 1963 was the signing of the truce to end the Korean War. As General McArthur once said, “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away.”

A time of refreshment will follow the services at the American Legion Post on Northside Drive in Bennington. There are no calling hours scheduled.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
