BENNINGTON -- Dr. Donald W. Humphreys, 79, a well known Bennington area physician, died July 17, 2003 at Hospice House Woodside in Pinellas Park, Fla.

Dr. Humphreys was born in Woodford on Jan. 19, 1924. He was the son of Julius and Mildred (DeForge) Humphreys. Dr. Humphreys attended local schools graduating from the former Bennington High School, he continued his education at the University of Vermont where he received his medical degree. During his college years, which were during World War II he served with the ASTP Program with the U.S. Army, following his college graduation he served in the United States Airforce.

He was married to the former Gloria Bashaw in Burlington on Aug. 30, 1945. Dr. Humphreys had been a family practitioner in Bennington for 25 years, upon relocating to Florida in 1974 he became an admitting physician at Bay Pines Medical Center in Bay Pines, Fla. where he stayed for 11 years prior to his retirement.

He was a communicant of St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Largo, Fla. and a past communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Bennington.

While residing in Bennington he was very active in community affairs.

He was past president of the American Academy of Family Physicians in Bennington County, past chairman of Sacred Heart Boy Scout Troop # 345, past chairman of the former Bennington Catholic High School Board, a former Bennington County Medical Examiner, worked as a volunteer builder for “Home Incorporated” and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 307.

He is survived by his wife of 58 year,s Gloria (Bashaw) Humphreys of Seminole, Fla.; three sons, Donald Humphreys II of Bokeelia, Fla., Gary Humphreys of Seminole and Brian Humphreys of Wesley Chapel, Fa.; seven daughters, Donna Lee Schlosser of Hanover, N.H., Linda Corcoran of Bennington, Mary Stockmal of Anchorage, Alaska, Gloria Powell of DeBary, Fla., Kathleen Dailey of Seminole, Patricia McAlister of Largo, Fla. and Susan Sanford of Madison, Ala.; a brother, Dr. Roderick Humphreys of Columbia, S.C.; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two children, David and Deborah Humphreys.

A service of remembrance will be held at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Saturday afternoon, July 26, at 2 p.m. Interment will take place in the Humphreys family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Dr. Humphreys may be made to Hospice House Woodside in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, VT 05201.
