1938-2013 BRATTLEBORO Donna Lee Smart, 75 of South Main Street died Tuesday afternoon, September 17, 2013 at Pine Heights Nursing Home, surrounded by her family following a period of declining health. Mrs. Smart was born in Brattleboro on May 28, 1938 the daughter of William "Ernie" and Helen (Delp) Retz. She was raised and educated in Brattleboro graduating from Brattleboro Union High School, Class of 1956. For several years she had been a resident of Vincentown, New Jersey where she had been employed as a secretary for the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers. With her family she later relocated back to Brattleboro in 1967. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Brattleboro Chapter #75 and with her husband held membership in the Now & Then Vehicle Club. Mrs. Smart was a woman of great faith and was a lifelong (longtime) member of First United Methodist Church in Brattleboro. Of her hobbies and interests, she enjoyed genealogy, researching and taking family history gathering trips with her sister Arlene that included visits to her family's farm in Pennsylvania. She was an avid reader and enjoyed time spent at Brook's Memorial Library. On several occasions she stated that she would have loved to be locked into the Library for a weekend. Mrs. Smart also enjoyed attending yard sales and time shared with her family. On January 12, 1957 at First United Methodist Church she was married to Lincoln F. Smart who survives. Besides her faithful and devoted husband of 56 years she leaves three daughters, Lisa Smart and Lori Sargent and her husband Ron, of Brattleboro and Lynda Lawrence and her husband Peter of Dummerston, five grandchildren, Travis and Amanda Sargent and Jessica, Nicholas and Cameron Lawrence, and a great grandson, Jeffrey Parker. She was predeceased by an infant son and her sister Arlene Holmquist. FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside Committal services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 A.M. in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery with Rev. Cheryl Meachem, pastor of First United Methodist Church officiating. Friends are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Sunday from 6 to 8 P.M.
