CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Dorcas Grout Montgomery Noe, 78, of Charleston, formerly of East Arlington, Vt., died February 13, 2005, at her residence.

She was born March 9, 1926, in Bennington, Vt., the daughter of Douglas and Winifred Grout Montgomery. She attended grammar school in the one-room schoolhouses in Sunderland, Vt., and attended grades 7-12 at Arlington Memorial High School where she graduated in 1944. She attended Framingham College in Massachucetts and was dorm director at a home economics dorm at the University of Vermont. She taught school in West Rutland, Vt., in 1951 and 1952 until her marriage in New York City on Sept. 20, 1952 to John Noe, a medical student she met at UVM.

During her married life of 53 years, she and her family lived in Florida, California, South Carolina and Vermont. Her main avocation over the years was as a librarian with the City of Charleston Library. She was a member of the Federated Church of East Arlington, Vt., and the Unitarian Church of Charleston.

She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed the Girl Scouts, hiking, music (particularly the piano), and Vermont.

Survivors include her husband John Noe of Charleston; her daughter, Dr. Mary C Noe of Dillon; her son, John R. Noe of Jamaica, Vt.; and other beloved relatives, Florence Howard of Bennington, Franklin Howard of Shaftsbury, Vt., Frances Montgomery of Columbia, Mary Montgomery Elliott of Columbia and Edith Montgomery Barrett of Winston-Salem, N.C.

She was predeceased by her brother, Douglas Clayton Montgomery of Columbia.

Burial at the Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington and a local memorial service at the Federated Church in East Arlington will be held in the Spring.
