1930 - 2014 BENNINGTON Doris Louise McGuire died peacefully on April 8, 2014, at Saint Peter's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Albany, N.Y. Doris was born on Sep. 27, 1930, in Bennington, Vt., to William Henry and Alma Cordeilia McGuire Lacroix. Doris grew up with her mother, father and sister, Claire, in Bennington. She attended nursing school at Albany Medical College and graduated with the class of 1953. Doris worked as a nurse at Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington. There, she became the supervising nurse in the hospital's operating room. Doris served in the United States Air Force and the New York Air National Guard from 1963 to 1972. She served as a flight nurse and attained the rank of Captain. Doris was a kind, compassionate person who lived her life caring for others. As a nurse, a friend, and family member, Doris was attuned to the needs of others and offered help and care to those around her. Doris was a devout Roman Catholic and her faith supported her through the challenges and sorrowful times during her life. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. She was a member of the Saint Anne's Society and an Associate Member of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. She resided in Bennington her entire life until she became too ill to care for herself. She leaves behind her loving sister, Claire Dings and her nieces, Joanne Larkin (Kenneth), Christine Drosky (Michael), Lynda Seiling (Jay), and Lisa Louise Ribeiro (Gus). She leaves her great-nieces and great-nephews, Justin Deming (Courtney), Meghan Connelly (Mark), Stephanie Drosky, Evan Drosky and Lucia Ribeiro. She had two great-great-nephews and a niece, Liam Paul and Jack McGuire Connelly, and Emery Ellen Deming. Doris was predeceased by her mother, father, infant brother, William, and her dear friend, Sister Ellen Therese Barry. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Prayer service will be held on Thursday morning, April 10, 2014, at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington at 11 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Death and Burial at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington at 11:30 a.m. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday morning, from 10 a.m. until the time of the prayer service. Interment with military honors will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart School and/or the Sisters of Saint Joseph through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, Vermont 05201.
