Dorothea M. Elwell 1926 - 2011 NORTH BENNINGTON, VT Dorothea M. Elwell, 85, a resident of McCarthy Acre Road in North Bennington, passed away Thursday Nov. 10, 2011, at Equinox Terrace in Manchester. Dorothy was born in Hoosick Falls, NY on March 30, 1926, daughter of Leon and Emma (VanValkenburg) Baker and attended local schools. In her earlier years, Dorothea worked at the First National Bank of North Bennington, and then, with her husband, Francis, owned and operated the North Bennington Variety Store. After selling the store, Dorothea went to work for the Shaftsbury School Hot Lunch Program. Dorothea was an avid knitter and quilt maker and enjoyed doing woodworking projects with her husband. She enjoyed her home and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were her true passion. Dorothea is survived by her children, Gerald L. Elwell and his wife Jane of North Bennington, her daughter, Sandra Hewson-Loveland and her husband Edward of North Bennington; her grandchildren, Debra Hewson, Gerald Mattison and his wife Lisa, William Elwell and his wife Carrie and Jamie Elwell and his wife Malynda, and her great grandchildren, Alexandra Elwell, Will Elwell and Jordan Mattison. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis H. Elwell, who passed away Jan. 22, 2011, her sister, Mildred Stewart, and brothers, Benjamin, Kenneth and LeRoy Baker. FUNERAL: At request of family, funeral services and interment will be private. There are no visiting hours.
